Dear President Obama,
SesameFree.Org and the following supporters agree that stringent rules for listing ALL ingredients, INCLUDING SESAME, on all food products, pharmaceutical and cosmetics should be enforced and followed by the government. We believe that it is the job of the government to inform us and allow us to decide what we chose to consume in terms of a possible allergy risk. We believe that sesame should be one of the ingredients required by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be listed as an allergen on labels . We believe would probably have a major reduction in the number of food allergy related emergency room visits.
Living with food allergies is tremendously difficult and causes a great deal of anxiety. Even the smallest bite of a food containing an allergen can cause an anaphylactic shock which is life threatening. There are no current laws in the US requiring "sesame" to be listed as an ingredient on products. Not only is this labeling not required by manufacturers but some even substitute the word Sesame for "Spices". Sesame should be listed as an ingredient on it's own, not hidden as a spice. Picking up a jar of tomato sauce today can cause a life threatening reaction because the ingredients just list a general "spices" on the label. Currently in Canada and throughout Europe Sesame is declared as an allergy causing ingredient and is recognized as such on food labels and cosmetic products.
Please Show your support to change the labeling and sign this petition. THE NEED IS REAL. The facts are known and have been out for years. There have been numerous reported incidents including my own personal experience. The fact that the labels of the products don't need to warn us that our loved ones come in contact with sesame is scary and goes against much of what the US government claims to represent- that people have the right to full disclosure. Many cities have instituted Calorie counts and other measures to protect consumers. The labeling of the products, including pharmaceutical and cosmetics containing Sesame Oil, Sesame Seeds or Spices need to be disclosed for the safety of the people that have Sesame Seed Allergies or Sensitivity.
This petition was a result of a very frustrated and scared 6 year old little girl who suffered a reaction from a stick of lipbalm. She said, "The President takes care of the people. If we ask him, he will make it a rule to put sesame on labels!"
Let's show her and others with sesame allergies that there is hope. Power in numbers!
